On March 22, 2012 the Ontario government announced the results of the scheduled two-year review of the FIT Program. The objective of the review has been to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. We are satisfied that they have reduced the incentive rates to a sustainable level for commercial scale projects, however the revised MicroFIT rate (10kW and less) may prove challenging to smaller residential installations. The report reaffirms the Ontario government’s continuing support for the FIT program and the renewable energy industry in Ontario.
The new program will provide priority consideration to Aboriginal and Community based programs which will jump forward in the application queue. While first come first served will still apply, a new “point system” has been introduced that will also assist in the prioritization of applications. The government has committed to act quickly in releasing the balance of the program changes to be detailed in the revised FIT rules and FIT contracts.
